Kathryn Cloyd: Our She Does Tri October Camper of the Month

By Christie Carlson

kc_big_george_halfWe’d like to introduce Kathryn Cloyd, known to her friends as KC, as our first She Does Tri Camper of The Month.

KC’s hard work, dedication and accomplishments in the world of triathlons have inspired us and hopefully will inspire you as you venture in the world of triathlon and She Does Tri.

When we told KC she had been chosen as our She Does Tri Camper of the Month she was overjoyed and enthusiastic to share her journey with us.

KC had been thinking about doing a triathlon for the past 10 years and this year she accomplished that goal...and much more.

All I could think about when I interviewed her was, “How did she do it?” Well here are her answers that I think may spark a fire in you, too!

How did KC get started in triathlon?

Sometimes we need a confirmed registration in an event to actually start the training, which is what brought KC to She Does Tri. KC’s friends had convinced her to sign up for a triathlon so KC turned to a She Does Tri Camp for help in getting ready.

KC participated in her first triathlon, the Columbia Triathlon in May, then the Diamond in the Rough Triathlon in June. In August KC placed 3rd in her age group at Luray International in Virginia followed by a first place age group finish at the Big George Half Iron Distance Triathlon in New York. Oh, and don’t forget KC’s PR (new personal record) at the Boston Marathon.

What was her first goal?

KC and Krista at Luray Triathlon

KC’s first goal was to complete an Olympic distance triathlon (1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run) and then to do a half Ironman. KC gave me a glimpse into her weekly training schedule. Along with a demandingwork schedule, KC still found the time to swim twice a week, run 4 days a weekand bike 3 days a week with one brick workout (short run immediately followinga bike ride) on the weekend.

What did KC do for nutrition during training?

KC said she had always been a healthy eater, but that the training made her focus more on her post workout intake. She now takes Hammer Recoverite to help her body after a grueling working and focuses on putting healthy nutrients into her body especially on long hard workout days.

KC on the bikeKC stated another benefit from training for a specific goal was the ability to get out of bed at 5:30am and get to the pool even in the bitter cold of winter. I think that reason alone is enough for her to be named She Does Tri Camper of the Month

What was her best training moment?

KC said her best moment was completing a ‘trial’ workout in preparation for the Big George Half where she did a 50 mile bike followed by a 10.5 mile run. She said that workout gave her the confidence boost she needed to complete the Big George Half.

What was her worst training moment?

Well, she told me that was a tricky question and that the worst she could think of was the beginning of her swimming training. The thought of swimming 0.9 miles scared her because she was just learning to swim and had to stop very often to catch a breath. The fear of drowning was the factor that kept her going and, wow, did she keep going!

With her positive attitude and all her accomplishments this year, KC deserves the title of SHE DOES TRI CAMPER OF THE MONTH!
