Doug Alban, Swim Coach
Doug was born and raised in Hopewell Junction, NY where he started competitive swimming at the age of five on a small swim club. At age 14, he began swimming with a year-round nationally recognized USA swim club in Newburgh, NY. then made one final move to another swim club in his senior year in Beacon, NY to swim under the tutelage of Larry Collins, where he qualified for his first Speedo Championship Series. Alban attended John Jay High School in Hopewell Junction where he competed on the Varsity swim team all four years and was named captain in his senior year. He qualified for the NY state championships in three of the four years. Alban ended his senior year ranked 8th in the 100 backstroke among public school athletes, despite having his season end prematurely due a severe car accident.
Doug overcame his injuries and competed all four years at Loyola College in Maryland at the Division I level, being a finalist in 3 events at every conference championship and qualifying for the ECAC Championships each year. Following graduation from College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematical Sciences, he was able to compete another year in USA Swimming, becoming a Finalist at the Speedo Championship Series.
Doug began his coaching career by coaching the senior/junior level kids of the Big Blue Swim Club every summer in college. He also coached the Pocantico Hills summer swim team in the Northern Westchester Swimming Association. Following college, he became the assistant coach for the John Jay/Ketcham High School swim team. In 2009, Alban was hired as the graduate assistant for the Goucher College Swim Team and also began the Goucher Masters program. Most recently, Doug runs the masters program at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, working under Bob Bowman (Michael Phelps' coach).
