Paige Poray: She Does Tri November Camper of the Month
By Christie Carlson
As our November She Does Tri Camper of the Month, we would like you all to meet Paige Poray!
Paige is a woman of great inspiration, achievement and character. Her story is one that shows how you can start the journey into triathlons and end up 137 lbs lighter and insanely confident and sexy in your everyday life!
What sparked Paige’s interest in training for a triathlon?
Paige started her journey with triathlons after she had undergone fertility treatment and her pregnancy, she wanted to lose the weight and was inspired by her husband's engagement in triathlons.
Paige started by running and was halted by a stress fracture and changed to swimming. After swimming she began to attend cycling classes, then her husband suggested the idea of doing a triathlon, it wasn't that far-fetched of an idea, she was already doing all three.
She had been attending his races and seeing the women cross the finish line all she could think about was, "Why can't I do that?"
She Does Tri was the perfect next step to learn the skills of triathlon training from women. As Paige puts it, "Guys don’t really know about the girl side of things."
What things Paige accomplished through training?
Paige said the respect that she has gained for herself and learning how crucial it is for women to make themselves a priority in their lives is really a great accomplishment. She competed in the Run to Remember Race in 2010 and again in 2011 in a time of 33:42 - 17:11 faster!
Paige’s latest race was the Baltimore Half Marathon in 2:43:17. Paige expressed the feeling of awe when she crossed the first finish line and realizing the power and strength she had exerted, knowing that it was all her and no one else was something great!
Other races that Paige participated in this year were the Fallston Duathlon (2:212:58), Tri for Our Veterans Sprint (1:24:06) and the Celebration Sprint Tri in 2:23:17.
Oh, and lets now forget the amazing accomplishment of losing 137 pounds - WOW!!!!
Paige’s goals for this year with triathlon, fitness, etc.?
Paige has many different goals that she is aiming for, most noteworthy is the goal to make a professional change and break in to the world of helping other women with their fitness and healthy lifestyle.
Paige wants to help women realize that they can live a healthy and fit lifestyle and feel amazing, and see that they are worth every workout and drop sweat they put in.
Paige also wants to continue to be a role model for her 2 sons, compete in a few international sprints, and also participate in her first half ironman in 2013 for her 40th birthday!
How does training effects her and what are some of the benefits she feels working toward a goal?
Paige loves to workout and train, may sounds silly to some, but as a She Does Tri camper that’s completely normal to say. The look of flushed cheeks, sore muscles and sweat droplets are only a few of the things that Paige loves when she’s working out and getting closer to her goals.
Paige describes herself as a numbers person and the feeling of seeing the numbers change and comparing different level workouts is awesome. The accomplishment of one goal and its positive results motivates her to train harder and smarter. Even though all these side effects are great, her benefit that I loved the most was the sensation of feeling sexy and confident while rockin’ the cute little dress!
How nutrition changed Paige’s life?
Nutrition is something that Paige says she struggles with (as do many of us). Paige is learning a lot of helpful skills from She Does Tri founder Krista Schultz and also through trial and error. Paige must get enough energy to keep up with the busy lifestyle of a 2 year old and 6 year old and of course having healthy skin and hair everyday!
Paige has attributed her weight loss to a healthy active lifestyle as well as healthy eating. Paige’s favorite healthy recipe is Butternut Squash with Spinach which can be found at the end of this article. Since she loves to cook, bake and eat, the training is great way to burn all the calories so that she can enjoy her family life and her triathlete life.
What does Paige’s normal weekly workout schedule looks like?
Paige normally does 3 runs consisting of a short tempo run, and a track workout and a long run, 2-3 swims and 2-3 bike workouts. She usually incorporates lifting and core workouts twice and week and likes to set aside Saturdays as family days with her husband and 2 kids.
What were Paige’s 'best' and 'worst' moments training for a triathlon?
When asking Paige about her worst moment of training, she said it was when she broker thumb and had to stay off the bike for 2 weeks in the middle of triathlon season.
When her doctor told her she was the most persistent woman because her thumb healed faster than normal, her response was, “Never mess with a woman who does triathlon just for fun!”
The best moment of Paige’s triathlon journey is the praise and love she gets from her family. She loves the feeling of finishing a race and seeing her husband, kids and old friends that don’t recognize her without her other half.
Her kids tell her everyday how proud they are of her and call her their ‘mom-thlete’, but today we are calling her by the name of She Does Tri Camper of The Month!
Inspired,
